The very first step of your cultivation practice sets the stage for the success of your next harvest…
Which is why so many growers dedicate time to understanding the best way to germinate their cannabis seeds.
In this article, we’ll show you how our master growers tackle this transformative phase in their plant’s development…
But first, what exactly is germination?
To put it simply, germination is the awakening of life within a seed.
It’s the moment when your seed transitions from dormancy to sprouting, revealing the first signs of potential for a robust cannabis plant to develop.
As you can imagine, germinating cannabis seeds is a delicate process that requires a careful balance between optimal conditions and a cultivator’s attention to detail.
And when done correctly, it marks the beginning of a potent, abundant, flavorful crop to come.
Now, there are many different methods for germinating seeds, and each has its own merit.
But let’s take a look at what our master growers recommend…
How To Germinate Cannabis Seeds
Before you begin germinating cannabis seeds, the first thing you want to do is make sure you’re storing them in an airtight container. Otherwise, you risk letting them go bad.
Also label each of your containers properly so you can keep track of a variant’s growth patterns when germinating different genetics in the same tray.
When you’re ready to begin germinating, take the seeds out of the bag and soak them in a small plastic cup for 24 hours. This enables them to start softening up, facilitating an easier and faster germination process.
Once you see the seeds begin to open up (after about 24 hours), it’s time to place them in your plug seedling tray.
Gently push each seed about 1/8 inch into the pressed hole that’s inside each cube.
After you’ve transplanted your seeds into the seedling tray, you’ll want to move them into your propagation room, with a temperature of 80 degrees and 70 percent humidity for optimal germination conditions.
Add some water to the bottom of your tray to ensure your seeds are absorbing the appropriate amount of moisture — but take care not to oversaturate your cubes, or you won’t see the robust root development you need for kickstarting vigorous vegetation.
Keep in mind, when your seeds are germinating, they don’t need a ton of light to start sprouting, nor do you need to introduce any extra nutrients into the equation. Instead, your goal is to nurture them in a warm, humid environment that facilitates sprouting.
In the video below, you’ll see how quickly seeds start to sprout when following the simple steps above.
Once your seeds have germinated and they’re ready for the next stage of their development, transfer into a 4-inch pot to let them grow.
After transplanting, you can ramp up the growing conditions ever so slightly, providing them with a PPM of ~500 and around a 1 EC.

The Importance of Feminized Cannabis Seeds
Save yourself time and resources by purchasing feminized cannabis seeds for your next crop cycle.
You see, male plants pollinate female plants, forcing them to focus on reproduction instead of potency and bud weight.
However, with feminized seeds, you won’t have to worry about identifying and removing male plants…
And your cannabis will expend energy on developing resinous flowers with heavy cannabinoid and terpene concentrations.
Why Use a Plug Seedling Tray For Your Germinating Seeds?
As we mentioned, there are many different ways to germinate cannabis seeds.
But a plug seedling tray makes the process as easy and convenient as possible, so long as you follow the simple steps we’ve outlined in the video above.
Plus, it’s a great way to discover which genetics you want to work with moving forward, and which aren’t best suited to your cultivation practice.
You can find plug seedling trays at your local hydro store, and they already come pre-moistened.
