From a Locked Garden Gate to a Basement Grow
A Purple Plant Behind a Locked Gate
Marcel’s cultivation story started with a phone call.
He was a kid at his grandmother’s house in Michigan. She kept a garden nobody was allowed into. One afternoon the phone rang for her, and his uncle sent him out back to get her.
He opened the gate.
“It was like time stopped,” he says. “It was the prettiest thing I had ever laid eyes on at that age. It was short, bushy, purple, and covered in crystals.”
His grandmother told him to keep quiet about it. From then on, he found every excuse to be in that garden: hauling compost, eggshells, fish scraps, blood and bone meal, cow manure. It smelled terrible. He didn’t care. He was learning a real skill without realizing it.
1991: A Metal Halide in a Basement Closet
By 14, Marcel was living with his oldest sister and starting high school. He popped seeds he found in an ashtray and grew them on a windowsill until they stretched and toppled over.
Then he read about Metal Halide lighting in a magazine.
He saved money from yard work and a paper route. His sister laughed when he asked her to buy the light. Her boyfriend bought it instead, and the two of them cleared out a basement closet and hung it.
His first run was a seeded disaster. He didn’t know a male would pollinate the whole room. By his senior year, he had it figured out.
The Competition Years
Ten Days, Two Branches, and a First-Place Cup
Michigan legalized medical cannabis in 2008. Marcel was first in line to become a caregiver.
In 2012 he was working part-time at a hydro store, teaching customers how to grow. He picked up one of the magazines by the front door, read about the Cannabis Cup, and a friend pushed him to enter.
The deadline was 10 days out.
He was in week seven of flower. He cut a branch off a Sour Diesel and a branch off a Grape Stomper, dried them in the flower room with zero flush, and dropped off seven grams of each.
He walked into the awards expecting nothing.
“They started with third place, and the guy received his award. Then second place, and the next guy walked on stage. I thought, well, I didn’t win this category. Finally, they announced the winner for first place Sativa, and when they said my name, I damn near passed out.”
First place Sativa for the Sour Diesel. Third place for the Grape Stomper. He was hooked.
Michigan’s King of Cannabis
After that first win, Marcel rebuilt his process around what his grandmother taught him. Blood and bone meal in the soil. Teas made from a guano mix. Ice water flushes. Forty-eight hours of darkness before harvest. A two-week dry at 64°F and 55% humidity.
The cups stacked up. Fifteen cups one year. Twenty the next.
When a magazine asked him to be on the cover, he offered them his logo. One of the editors told him Leaf Doctor was fine, but he was really Michigan’s King of Cannabis. The title stuck.
In 2014, High Times brought its Cannabis Cup to Michigan. Marcel had 39 local cups at that point and could not cover the entry fees, so a dispensary-owner friend sponsored him.
He submitted four entries. Three earned podium finishes:
- 1st place Hybrid: Gorilla Glue #4
- 2nd place Sativa: Ghost Train Haze
- 2nd place Indica: Aliendawg
His fourth entry also finished in the top 10.
Months later his Ghost Train Haze took the cover for strongest strains on earth at 27.46% THC, a number that was extraordinary at the time. His Aliendawg placed second on that same list. Both were grown by Marcel.
He’s now at 162 cups.
And he has no plans to stop.
“I’m trying to build a legacy,” he says. “I want to set a record of wins so high that anyone who wants to challenge my title will have to put in the work.”
His motivation is his daughters. He wants them to see what happens when someone commits completely to a craft.
His Advanced Nutrients Lineup
The Products He Runs Today
Marcel says he began using Advanced Nutrients around 2009 or 2010, starting with Mother Earth. The move from homemade inputs to a professional nutrient line came down to completeness and how his plants responded.
“What made me start using Advanced was that it was a complete nutrient line, and the plants adapted very well to it,” he says. “I knew from the very first run back in 2010 it was going to be something I kept in the garden. I’ve tried other nutrient companies that have come and gone, but I’ve always returned to Advanced Nutrients.”
Of his 162 cups, he estimates around 80+ were grown using Advanced Nutrients.
He runs:
- pH Perfect® Sensi Grow & Bloom
- OG Organics™ Iguana Juice® Grow & Bloom
- Bud Candy®
- Tasty Terpenes™
- Big Bud®
- Voodoo Juice®
- Tarantula®
Simplicity Over Stacking Additives
Asked how Advanced Nutrients compares with other nutrients, his assessment is direct.
“It’s a perfect 10 in every category vs other nutrients. Smell 10, power 10, flavor 10, bag appeal 10.”
He also values the simplicity.
“With a lot of these other newer companies, you’ve got to add a bunch of stuff. I like Advanced because I don’t have to add a bunch of stuff.”
Four Genetics Worth Knowing
Marcel breeds as seriously as he grows. Four of his standout genetics have each earned first-place cup honors:
- Frozen Muscle
- Fake Love
- ChemStar
- Palladium
Marcel says all four are strong yielders that test well and have received what he calls “taste out of this world” feedback.
Fake Love took first place at the Great Lakes Genetics competition, while Palladium took first at the Copy Cat Cup.
He has also grown a multi-award-winning GMO that consistently tests above 30% while delivering the gassy nose and heavy potency growers remember from the 1990s.
Genetics, Nutrition, and the Finished Flower
Every cultivar carries a genetic ceiling for flavor and terpene expression. Hitting it is a separate problem, and it’s a metabolic one.
Terpene synthesis is expensive work for a plant. It runs on steady access to carbohydrates and sugars for resin building, phase-correct phosphorus and potassium through bloom, and bioavailable micronutrients to keep the enzymatic machinery behind essential-oil production working. Cap any one of those inputs, or deliver it at the wrong stage, and the plant cannot express what the genetics promised.
That is the gap generic fertilizer leaves open. Products built for general agriculture were not designed around cannabis-specific terpene pathways. Cannabis-specific nutrition is.
Marcel sees the difference where it counts, in the jar.
“It just all around makes them better. Aroma and flavor unmatched. Terpene expression unmatched.”
That matters well beyond a trophy table. Bag appeal opens the door. Flavor closes the deal. Frost, structure, and density get a buyer to pick up the jar, but flavor and aroma are what make them remember the strain, ask for it by name, and pay for it again.
In a market crowded with forgettable mids, that is the difference between flower that moves and flower that sits.
His 162 cups show how consistently his flower has stood out on competition tables.
Getting the Genetics Into More Rooms
Marcel is clear about where he wants this to go next.
“I want my genetics to be grown all over the world.”
He also wants that wider reach to help patients get the medicine they need.

What Growers Can Take From This
Marcel started with a closet, a borrowed light, and seeds from an ashtray. Thirty-five years later, he has 162 cups, with an estimated 70 to 80 grown using Advanced Nutrients.
And for someone who has spent most of his life growing cannabis, there’s one thing about Marcel that may surprise people.
“I don’t even smoke pot,” he says. “That’s going to be a shock to the world.”
For Marcel, the obsession has always been the plant itself – learning how it grows, refining his process, breeding genetics, and seeing just how far he can push the quality of the finished flower.
The takeaway from his story isn’t complicated. Get genetics worth growing. Feed them something actually built for the plant. Then stay obsessive about the finish, because flavor is where reputations are made and where buyers decide whether they come back.
“For all the future growers who come after me, I want you to know that you can be the best,” he says. “It’s not an easy road, but it’s one worth traveling.”
